Academic Hikes
Throughout the school year I love to take the students on different hikes. Some of these are just around the school yard, but I am very fortunate that I have had access to creeks and woods that are on our grounds. Below is a list of different types of hikes that I have conducted to teach a variety of academic skills. Many teachers think that using the outdoors for a classroom needs to center around science concepts. That cannot be farther from the truth. Take a look and then put on your hiking shoes!

Preposition Hike- A great way to introduce prepositions and bring meaning to them is to take this hike. For an explanation, click here.

Snapshot Walk-This hike can be combined with other hikes. It is a great way to find those students who have a good eye behind the lens of a camera. For more explanation, click here.

Rain Walk-Make sure you have the right attire and accessories for this walk. For an explanation, click here.

The Hitchhiker Hike-Grab a pair of tube socks and a magnifying glass and venture outside. For an explanation, click here.

Shadow Hike (Teaching Perspective)-This hike is so much fun. I have two different versions on how to use this hike. For the explanations, click here.

Personification Hike- The students are challenged with finding items in the outdoors and personifying them along with writing creative word phrases. Some ideas for poetry accompany this hike. Click here for more explanation of this hike.
